Overview

With the wide range of handling equipment available, in the form of slide sheets, hand blocks, rope ladders etc, it is no longer acceptable practice to LIFT people as a matter of course. Lifting can only be justified in extreme or emergency situations. All handling operations should be assessed and a safe method identified. This will ensure the health and safety of both employees and others, reducing and preventing occupational injuries.

There are a variety of safe people handling techniques. It is assumed that the person is medically fit to be moved, that the bed has been secured by brakes etc and the bed height is adjusted to an appropriate height.

Course Programme

The course programme meets the legal requirements of the Manual Handling Operations Regulation 1992.

Manual Handling Equipment & Techniques - including chair to chair transfers, turning a person in bed, sitting a person up in bed, moving a person in bed - with slide sheets and hoists amongst other things
Principles of moving and handling
Unsafe moving practices
Ergonomics
Posture
Causes of back pain
Hazard & Risk
Anatomy of the spine
The legal framework- including the Health & Safety at Work Act and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations
Duties of the employer / employee

Assessment Method

Ongoing assessment throughout the course.

1 Day.

Qualification

Certificate in Manual Handling.
